As he boards the train, he notices the Metaverse Navigator appear on his phone and the owl from before begins speaking to him. As the protagonist taps the app on his phone, he enters the Metaverse and the owl introduces himself as Lufel. After a scuffle with Shadows, the protagonist awakens his persona and the two fight their way out of Mementos.
Lufel explains that humanity's hopes and desires are being stolen, including Nagisa's. While attempting to leave the Metaverse, the pair are attacked by Shadows, creatures formed from warped desires who attack humans on sight. Nagisa awakens his Persona, Jápelošík, and is able to defeat the shadows with Lufel's help, allowing them to return to the real world.
Their Personas are named Persona Duos, as they are defined as derivatives of the protagonist's Persona and join the battle along with the protagonist as a duo.
There are certain side characters that have quests to complete. Beating said side quests unlocks interactions with Daily Life.
All-Out Attacks can now be initiated by any party member (except navigators) once every enemy has been downed. A new feature to this game are Highlight which are performed in a similar vein to Showtime, albeit it is performed with only one character rather than two. After charging up a meter, a character can be selected and they will use a Highlight. Some Highlight like Lufel's are stat buffs or health recovery rather than attacks. There is also a seperate gacha to obtain weapons for each character. The weapons from the gacha give an specific benefit to the character who equips them. Certain character are variations of another and can’t put two versions of the same character on one team. For example, several characters can't be together in the same team with their own alternate versions such as Mont with her 'Figure Skater' alter version.
After a brief clash, Joker is able to break the hooded figure's white mask, revealing it to be the copyright X protagonist, who then proceeds to shoot him.
Excluding the false Igor in Persona 5, this game marks the first time that recycled voice lines of Isamu Tanonaka are not used for Igor's Japanese voice. Igor instead has a new voice actor that provides him with brand new voice lines.
